Natasha Moraga

Natasha Moraga was born in La Mirada, California, to a Mexican mother and a Chilean father. She holds both American and Mexican citizenship. At eight years old, her parents moved the family to Mexico so the children would have a more Latin American education. They settled first on a ranch near Guadalajara before eventually landing in Puerto Vallarta. Natasha didn't love the move at first, but she doesn't regret it.

Natasha Moraga nació en La Mirada, California, hija de madre mexicana y padre chileno. Tiene doble ciudadanía, estadounidense y mexicana. A los ocho años, sus padres trasladaron a la familia a México para que los hijos tuvieran una educación más latinoamericana. Se establecieron primero en un rancho cerca de Guadalajara antes de llegar finalmente a Puerto Vallarta. A Natasha no le encantó la mudanza al principio, pero no se arrepiente.

She left home at fifteen and lived a nomadic life for a time, staying with friends in different parts of Mexico and eventually in Germany. During a trip to Barcelona in 2005, she encountered the trencadis mosaic work of Antoni Gaudi. Something clicked. Despite not being able to draw, she had always felt the need for an artistic medium, and the highly tactile nature of tile work spoke to her. She returned to Puerto Vallarta and, in 2009, secured a scholarship to train with the celebrated mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar in Philadelphia. She describes that week as mostly carrying buckets and watching, but it formed the foundation of everything that followed.

Her father, a businessman in Puerto Vallarta, convinced her to open a restaurant first. She ran it for two years before shutting it down in 2010 to pursue art full-time. Her first major project, Episodio 1, was completed between October 2011 and February 2012 on a public kindergarten wall in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood, replacing graffiti with a vibrant mosaic. The community response was overwhelming. From there came Episodio 2, a massive 500-square-meter mural in Marina Vallarta that became Mexico's second-largest mosaic mural. She went on to design the iconic mosaic-covered letters spelling "Puerto Vallarta" that greet visitors at the northern highway entrance.

Her most ambitious project, Parque de los Azulejos (Tile Park), began in 2017 to coincide with Puerto Vallarta's 100th anniversary. Located in Lázaro Cárdenas Park in the Romantic Zone, the project set out to cover every surface, from benches and planters to staircases and gazebo columns, in hand-cut tile. To organize the effort, she founded Mozayko Vallarta, which ran three-day workshops open to anyone. Over 300 people were trained. The park, now a federally protected landmark, was taken over by a new government administration in 2023 with only five percent remaining to finish.

Su proyecto más ambicioso, el Parque de los Azulejos, comenzó en 2017 para coincidir con el centenario de Puerto Vallarta. Ubicado en el Parque Lázaro Cárdenas en la Zona Romántica, el proyecto buscaba cubrir cada superficie, desde bancas y jardineras hasta escaleras y columnas del quiosco, con azulejo cortado a mano. Para organizar el esfuerzo, fundó Mozayko Vallarta, que organizó talleres de tres días abiertos a cualquier persona. Más de 300 personas fueron capacitadas. El parque, ahora patrimonio protegido federalmente, fue retomado por una nueva administración gubernamental en 2023 con solo cinco por ciento restante por terminar.

In 2019, she was honored by the Asociación Mexicana de Mujeres Empresarias for her contributions to Puerto Vallarta's cultural landscape. She classifies what she does as urban or street art, community-based and community-made. All the colors and figures have meaning, she says, and nothing is arranged haphazardly. She continues to work on private commissions, international collaborations, and her newest venture, The Garden of Creation, a jungle mosaic installation in Puerto Vallarta that merges art with immersive storytelling.

En 2019, fue reconocida por la Asociación Mexicana de Mujeres Empresarias por sus contribuciones al paisaje cultural de Puerto Vallarta. Ella clasifica lo que hace como arte urbano o callejero, basado en y creado por la comunidad. Todos los colores y figuras tienen significado, dice, y nada está arreglado al azar. Continúa trabajando en comisiones privadas, colaboraciones internacionales y su proyecto más reciente, The Garden of Creation, una instalación de mosaico en la selva de Puerto Vallarta que fusiona arte con narrativa inmersiva.
